Is an HSK score report valid for two years?
The official HSK Level 1 page states that HSK scores are valid for two years starting from the test date. The same two-year statement appears on other official HSK level pages and in the 2026 trial notice.
This validity period matters when a university or programme requests recent proof of Chinese proficiency. A score can remain part of your personal record after two years, but the receiving institution may no longer accept it for an application.
What can HSK results be used for?
The official HSK overview lists university admission, level-based learning, course exemption and credit, employment decisions, teaching evaluation and learner self-assessment among the uses of HSK scores.
These are categories of use, not universal guarantees. An HSK result does not automatically grant admission, a scholarship, a job or academic credit. The receiving organisation decides which level, score and test date it accepts.

Passing score versus required score
An official test page may publish a passing threshold. For example, the Level 1 page lists 120 out of 200. An institution can still require a higher score or a different HSK level.
Always separate three numbers: the official pass threshold, your actual total and the recipient's requirement. Meeting the first does not prove that you meet the third.
What details should you verify?
Before submitting a result, check the candidate name, test date, level, total score, skill scores and the recipient's deadline. If the institution requests verification or an additional report, use the official after-results services rather than editing a downloaded document.
For time-sensitive applications, calculate the two-year window from the exam date, not the date you downloaded the report. Ask the recipient how it handles a score that expires during application review.
How to plan a retest
If your score will expire before the application deadline, schedule a new test early enough for results to be released. Use the official calendar and local-centre availability, then work backwards from the institution's document deadline.
Retesting is also reasonable when your old level no longer represents your ability. Use a full practice paper first so the new booking is based on current evidence rather than an outdated course completion date.
