Check the HSK version first
The most important label on an HSK book is the version it follows. A book designed for the six-level HSK 2.0 exam and a book organized around the nine-level HSK 3.0 standard are not interchangeable.

A textbook is easier to use when its workbook, answer key and audio belong to the same series.

Evaluate skill coverage
A vocabulary-only book is not a complete course. Check whether the material develops listening, speaking, reading, writing and the communication tasks expected at the target level.

Check vocabulary and grammar organization
Good material explains whether word counts are cumulative or level-specific and separates required grammar from optional enrichment. Avoid books that advertise a level without showing a contents page or sample unit.
- Look for Hanzi, pinyin and learner-facing meaning.
- Check that pinyin is placed clearly and consistently.
- Confirm that examples use the claimed level.
- Check whether grammar explanations include usable examples.
Avoid unauthorized PDF copies
HSK One does not distribute copyrighted textbook PDFs. Use publisher stores, libraries or authorized digital editions. Unofficial scans may omit audio, answer keys, revisions or entire pages.
Use online tools alongside a textbook
A book can provide sequence and explanation, while online tools can provide flashcards, listening filters, reading sets, saved mistakes and timed practice.
- Follow the textbook unit order.
- Review the same words in flashcards.
- Use reading and listening practice between units.
- Take a mock test after a full review cycle.
