Position nouns for directions
place + 东 / 南 / 西 / 北 / 北方 / 东方 / 南方 / 西方 / 中间Use direction nouns to locate a place or describe where something is relative to another place.
Time adverbs for sequence and immediacy
才 / 马上 / 先 / 一会儿 / 刚 / 刚刚 / 一直 + VPPlace these adverbs before the action to locate it in a sequence or show recency, delay, immediacy or continuity.
向 for direction or path
向 + direction / place + VUse 向 before a direction or place to show where an action moves or points.
Result complements with 到, 住, 走 and 上
V + 到 / 住 / 走 / 上Add one of these result complements after a verb to show what result the action reaches: finding something, retaining it, removing it or completing a closing/attachment result.
Extended directional complements
V + 出 / 起 / 下 / 上 / 起来 / 下去 / 下来Directional complements can extend beyond physical direction to show a result, the start of an action or continuation.
Elapsed time after a completed action
event + time span + 了This quantity complement can state how much time has passed since an action or event ended.
Sequential clauses
先…,再 / 然后…Use 先 for the first step and 再 or 然后 for the following step.
