Use a personal pronoun as the subject before a verb or 是-sentence.

我是学生。Wǒ shì xuésheng.I am a student.

她是老师。Tā shì lǎoshī.She is a teacher.

Use 是 to identify or classify a person or thing.

我是中国人。Wǒ shì Zhōngguó rén.I am Chinese.

他是学生。Tā shì xuésheng.He is a student.
